Your Questions About Bestec Power Supply

Thomas asks…

Could the problem still be the power supply?

I’m trying to fix a computer in which the power shuts off by itself at various times. Sometimes only after a few minutes, sometimes after an hour or so. My first thought is a bad power supply. I have a power supply tester and used it. The power supply lights up the tester lights okay. Does that mean the power supply is definitely good or could it be underpowering (not enought power) the computer? The computer is a HP Pavilion A6313W and the power supply is a Bestec brand 250W.
more details: My second thought was a heating issue. The cpu fan would make a noise and change speeds. I changed the cpu fan yesterday (yes, and put only a small amount of thermal grease on the cpu to mate with the heatsink). The cpu fan seems to run fine now but the computer still powers off (as though someone pulled the plug out).
additonal question: could a bad motherboard cause the occasional power turn off? I’d think a bad motherboard would either be totally dead or not. right?
more detail: since the cpu fan seems to work fine, I thought maybe a ram issue. The computer has 2 sticks of RAM. So I tested each individually. Each time, the computer still would power off. I tried testing with ram software (in Vista, memtest86, windows memory tester), each time the computer turned off during the test.

admin answers:

It is more likely an overheating problem or a short circuit. If the power supply unit was bad the machine wouldn’t boot.

Daniel asks…

Question about upgrading Computer GHz and RAM?

I got a computer model SR5123WM and I don’t know if I can upgrade the GHz (or time clock/cpu) and RAM because it has 2.1GHz and 2GB RAM and it’s not pretty fast for me. I was wondering if I can upgrade the GHz to 3.5+ and RAM to 4GB+ anyone tell me? I’m new at this.

And also, is it better to buy a new computer or upgrading is better?

Thanks

admin answers:

The Presario SR5123WM isn’t really that old (2007). It uses a standard mini tower case, and a couple perfectly decent SATA drives, a 320GB hard drive, and a 16X DVDRW. Those are parts you can continue using.

Http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main?sel_flg=partlist&model=GC660AA&HP_model=GC660AA&modname=Compaq+Presario+SR5123WM+home+PC+(GC660AA)&template=main&plist_sval=ALL&plist_styp=flag&dealer_id=&callingsite=&strsrch=&keysel=%3F&catsel=%3F

The motherboard is an ECS MCP61PM-HM, AKA „Nettle2-GL8E.“ It doesn’t help you. The only upgrade option would be a slightly faster 65W version Athlon 64 X2, like a 5600+. It would still be slow, so it’s not worthwhile.

The current power supply is a 250-watt Bestec ATX-250-12V, AKA „Zinfandel.“ That also needs to be replaced.

So, that’s what your upgrade path looks like, to buy a new motherboard, CPU, RAM, and power supply, and continue using your current case, hard drive, and DVD-RW.
