The first Tournament of Roses was staged in 1890
by members of Pasadena’s Valley Hunt Club,
former residents of the East and Midwest eager to
showcase their new home’s mild winter weather.
„In New York, people are buried in snow,“
announced Professor Charles F. Holder at a Club
meeting. „Here our flowers are blooming and our
oranges are about to bear. Let’s hold a festival to
tell the world about our paradise.“

During the next few years, the festival expanded to include marching bands and motorized floats. The games on the town lot (which was re-named Tournament Park in 1900) included ostrich races, bronco busting demonstrations and a race between a camel and an elephant (the elephant won). Reviewing stands were built along the Parade route, and Eastern newspapers began to take notice of the event. In 1895, the Tournament of Roses Association was formed to take charge of the festival, which had grown too large for the Valley Hunt Club to handle.

In 1902, the Tournament of Roses decided to enhance the day’s festivities by adding a football game – the first post season college football game ever held. Stanford University accepted the invitation to take on the powerhouse University of Michigan, but the West Coast team was flattened 49-0 and gave up in the third quarter. The lopsided score prompted the Tournament to give up football in favor of Roman-style chariot races. In 1916, football returned to stay and the crowds soon outgrew the stands in Tournament Park. William L. Leishman, the Tournament’s 1920 President, envisioned a stadium similar to the Yale Bowl, the first great modern football stadium, to be built in Pasadena’s Arroyo Seco area. The new stadium hosted its first New Year’s football game in 1923 and soon earned the nickname “The Rose Bowl.”

The Tournament of Roses has come a long way since its early days. The Rose Parade’s elaborate floats now feature high-tech computerized animation and exotic natural materials from around the world. Although a few floats are still built exclusively by volunteers from their sponsoring communities, most are built by professional float building companies and take nearly a year to construct. The year-long effort pays off on New Year’s morning, when millions of viewers around the world enjoy the Rose Parade.

Nicknamed “The Granddaddy of Them All” the Rose Bowl Game has been a sellout attraction every year since 1947. That year’s contest was the first game played under the Tournament’s exclusive agreement with the Big Ten and Pac-10 conferences. The 1998 Rose Bowl Game was the 52nd anniversary of that agreement, the longest standing tradition of any collegiate conference and a bowl association. Now, as part of the Bowl Championship Series, the Rose Bowl has hosted the National Championship Game between the top two teams in the nation in 2002 and 2006, and will host the National Championship again in 2010.

Richard asks…

What are some fundraising ideas?

I’m an officer for the NHS Band, and we’re stumped on ideas for fundraising over the summer. We need to raise money to lower the cost of our trip to the 2008 Tournament of Roses Parade. Each student has to pay individually, but we’ve already done some other fundraisers as a whole. Many of our students come from backgrounds of poverty, and it’ll be hard for them to pay the full price. Your ideas are greatly appreciated.

„Relay for Roses“ you could call it:
my school does these things where there are about 8 teams and people and they set up tents on our football field and each team has 6 or more people and it goes for 12 hours from 6pm to 6 am
somebody from each team is ALWAYS walking on the track then they will get done with their shift and another teamate will switch

my school also plays music while this is going on

you get the money by going to local stores and asking if they will sponsor you in the event and you can also set a cost per team to join

ex. A team of 8 people the group fee is 80 dollars each person pays 10 dollars

80 X8 (or more) = 640(+)
and that is not including sponsors

David asks…

Do you think Derrick rose has the potential to someday pass Michael Jordan?

He gets better every year and adds a new weapon to his arsenal! He can already drive to the hoop, has a reliable jump shot, and now can shoot the 3 pointer! He seems like one of those players that come along every once in a while. I haven’t seen many point guards with his combination of strength, speed, and precision. He gets his teammates involved and shows true leadership and the will to win. If anyone can handle the Jordan torch I think it would be Derrick Rose. What do you think?

admin answers:

With people like Rose or Lebron or even Durant to name a few they have time to get better, time to win championships, and time to see what comes along in their career.

Jordan greatness transpires from what he did in College and in the pro and in the Olympics. Not too many player have a college or I should say NCAA tournament championship as well as college player of the year award, add that with 6 rings, 6 finals mvps, 5 league mvps, and a host of other accomplishments it is going to take a truly special player to achieve all of that.

The Bulls have one of the best record in the league ans some of that is due to other team losing with injuries like the Mavs and the Heat but injuries is part of the game and the Bulls center is injured too so with that being said then Rose is having some type of year and the question is will it continues this season and several other season or is this a one, two or three season thing. People like Kobe and Lebron and Jordan as well as Bird and magic to name a few their greatness was almost their entire career so we have to wait about Rose in that regard.

But I will say that he is making the Bulls relevant again and giving them someone to talk about instead of a retired Jordan.

Thomas asks…

What would be the best way to do a college football playoff system?

Top 64 teams? 32? 16? 6? 4? what do you think, and do you have them at alternate locations like the NCAA tournament in basketball? What do you do?

admin answers:

It is so easy. And $ that you cannot believe is there to support it.

3 divisions – NCAA Division 1AA, Division II, and Division III,
ALREADY HAVE A 16 TEAM SINGLE ELIMINATION PLAYOFF !!!

Take the 6 BCS conference champions (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Big East, PAC 10, and the SEC. Add 10 „At-Large“ teams as selected by some voting poll, but guarantee to include at least 2 teams from non BCS conferences. Seed the teams 1 thru 16.

Have the Championship game and both Semi Finals rotate among the 4 major bowls (Orange, Sugar, Fiesta and Rose). Have the First round (8 games) and the Quarter Finals (4 games) played in the next 12 largest warm weather stadiums (many of which will be the sites of other bowl games. Eliminate the bowl system as we know it. Except for the Finals and Semi Finals, no team may play in a site that one of its conference teams has for a home field.

LET THE FUN BEGIN………………….
Within 10 years, the NCAA Championship will have a larger TV
audience than the Super Bowl !!!!!!!!!!!!!
