Your Questions About Does Any Phone Can Be Unlocked

Chris asks…

Unlocked Phones?

What are unlocked phones? Can I use them with Sprint? Could I get an unlocked Iphone to use with sprint?

admin answers:

An unlocked phone is a term to represent a GSM (SIM Card using) phone that has been „unlocked“ to be able to be used with other GSM carriers. They’re two major GSM Carriers in the USA. They are Cingular (at&t) and T-Mobile. Most other carriers like Verizon Wireless, Sprint, Metro PCS are CDMA carriers which do not use SIM Cards.

You cannot „unlock“ CDMA phones. If the carrier is Verizon Wireless, they offer a service called Wide and Open. This service allows you to bring any CDMA phone to their network and use it. This means a Sprint phone will work on Verizon’s network, but a Verizon phone will not work on Sprint.

The iPhone is a GSM (SIM card using) phone and will not work with any carrier besides Cingular(at&t) and T-Mobile. If you unlock an iPhone from Cingular (at&t) to use it with T-Mobile, it will lose a lot of its prime features like internet, text messaging, etc.

Unlocked Phone?

Right know I use a family plan with tmobile.
I have a few questions.
1. What are unlocked phones?
2. Can you use unlocked phones with ANY phone carrier?
3. Anything I should make sure about before buying an unlocked phone?

admin answers:

An unlocked phone is a phone that you can use with any carrier. When you try to change sims on a locked phone it won’t recognize it but if you change sims on a unlocked phone you will be able to use it. I don’t think you really need to worry about unlocked phones because ive been using unlocked phones all my life cuz i travel alot and all i do is switch the sims. Just make sure you buy from a good place that you trust.

Steven asks…

How do you use an unlocked phone?

How do you know it will work with your carrier? For ex. I have Verizon n I want a different phone but don’t want to renew my contract! So how do I know the unlocked phone I buy will work with them? I don’t want to spend 500 to 600 and the phone not work…

admin answers:

Unlocked phones are generally designed for AT&T and T-Mobile, who use SIM cards in their phones for service, allowing you to change phones easily. These types of phones are called GSM. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA technology and do not have SIM cards. If you want an unlocked phone to work on these networks, you have to buy a CDMA phone.

Confused about unlocked Phones?

I’m thinking about buying an gsm unlocked cell phone from amazon. But i’m a little confused…

When you get an unlocked phone and you wanna use it with a different cell phone company can you do it over the phone or do you have to go to the store and get it done? And what cell phone companies can I use it with?

admin answers:

An unlocked phone simply means your phone isn't "locked" to one carrier. That one carrier does not own you.

The flexibility with unlocking is you can go to any carrier or swap out your SIM card.
Let's say you're going travelling to the UK. You can easily swap out your UK SIM with your US one.

Yes you can order one online, by phone, or in store. However, you still should go in-store to set things up. Most major carriers allow you to activate it online once you have it shipped though.
