Carol asks…
Know any poems/stories with the theme of ‚bitterness‘?
For a Speech and Debate Tournament, I am planning on presenting three separate pieces with the same central theme. I was thinking something along the line of bitterness, loss of innocence, and that sort of thing. I was hoping to get some suggestions on pieces that fit those lines. They can be excerpts from stories, poems, and that sort of thing. (They must already be published.) The overall presentation must be 10 minutes long but it doesn’t matter how long the individual pieces are. If you have any suggestions, they would be appreciated.

David asks…
What places in the Pasadena area are still taking volunteers for the summer?
Is the volunteering for the Tournament of Roses year round?
Where do most younger college students volunteer here?
admin answers:
Pasadena has many volunteer opportunities, but you’d have to call to see who has openings. Most of the volunteering for the Tournament of Roses that you’d be able to do is float building and that’s in the weeks before the parade. (The white coat volunteers you see generally have years of service volunteering for the Rose Parade and tend to be working adults.)

During the season (August through May) they need volunteer ushers, who also get to watch the great shows, sometimes during the summer they need volunteers to stuff envelopes, that sort of thing.
South Pasadena Library

South Pasadena Senior Center (next to library)

Call the closest spiritual center (church, temple, etc) to ask if they have volunteer opportunities. Some have soup kitchen type opportunities. Senior centers and homes typically welcome volunteers, reading to the seniors, entertainment, etc.

And try the museums (Norton Simon, Pacific Asia, Huntington Library, Pasadena Museum of California Art, etc), but some start their docent programs in August, and sometimes volunteer positions are very competitive, taken by those Art History majors who didn’t get the very few summer internships (one internship only at Norton Simon).
Good luck!
Laura asks…
Where do all the Rose Bowl Parade floats go?
At the end of the Tournament of Roses Parade do all the floats park so people can look at them?
Do they immediately return to the warehouses / garages they were built in?
Is there a monster shredder waiting for them at the end of the line?
What is the process once they arrive at the end of the road?
admin answers:
The afternoon after the Rose Parade and all day for the next two days, you can see the beautiful creations close-up. Allow about 2 hours to see them all. Parking is limited at the viewing area, and your best bet is to use the park-and-ride service.
