And the main thing that struck me is the idea of a religious boy– because we have to say that Pi is a practicing Hindu, Muslim, and Christian– the idea of a religious boy in a lifeboat with a wild animal struck me as a perfect metaphor for the human condition. Humans aspire to really high things, right, like religion, justice, democracy. At the same time, we’re rooted in our human, animal condition. And so, all of those brought together in a lifeboat struck me as being… As a perfect metaphor. …my novel is about the line between fiction and fact. It is about how we interpret reality, right? Reality isn’t just out there; it’s how we interpret it. And to me, that’s what religion is about, isn’t it? It’s an interpretation of reality.

All throughout Life of Pi, characters are seeking the meaning of life. The primary seeker for this profound truth is, of course, Pi himself. As the first chapter notes, as an adult Pi studies both science (zoology specifically) and religion at colleges. These interests are both the natural extension of how Pi passed his time while he was a boy: he was the son of a zookeeper but also a devotee of several religions, seeking direct knowledge of God from an early age. Both practices seek to understand the mysteries of human existence.

Tamara Fernando is a freelance writer based in Seattle, Washington. In this essay she argues that Life of Pi can be read on one level as a Christian parable. The suffering and ultimate spiritual resurrection that Pi experiences parallel the suffering and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and at the end of the novel, similar to Jesus, Pi offers his own parables about the meaning of faith.

Life of Pi asks many questions of life, survival, belief, faith and the importance of imaginative story telling.

The bulk of the story of Pi and Richard Parker deals with the theme of humankind’s relationship with the animal kingdom. In Pi’s story the moral is that when humankind respects and understands the ways of the animal kingdom, the two can live together in relative harmony.

Good luck!

Tips for driving from seattle to edmonton, canada during snow season?

admin answers:

You’ll be going over the Rockies; take non-perishable food, water, blankets, a flash light, and a working cell phone, just in case; also be sure to have a hat and gloves in addition to your coat. Be sure you have chains for your car as well. Check road conditions BEFORE you leave; in particular, check to be sure the mountain pass(es) you need to use are open. I’d suggest driving in the U.S. Over I-90 to Helena, then north to Edmonton; the interstate is much more likely to be safe in the winter, unless you are very familiar with Canadian roads, of course.

Have a safe trip! 🙂

Planning on driving from stockton,ca(central vlly) to seattle after xmas, shld I be concernd abt snow/weath?

It is our first time driving to the pacific northwest, and I just want to be ready, and maybe get some travel advise, and maybe the best place to stop over in Oregon as well for a day. thanks.

admin answers:

From Stockton to Seattle I am assuming you are just going up 5. Really the main place you might run into snow is Siskiyou Pass at the California/Oregon border. It’s a good idea to buy chains ahead of time and keep them in your car. If the weather turns suddenly, the service stations along the road instantly double or triple their prices on chains. They usually keep the freeway cleared, but you might be legally required to install chains if it is actively snowing and the signs say you must. It can snow along the rest of the way through Portland and Seattle, but it’s not terribly common. My advice would be to try to hit the pass in the middle of the day when there is the least chance for black ice and take it easy on the downhill corners. If you’re merely looking for a pit stop or a motel in Oregon, Medford or Eugene are easy off and on. Ashland tends to be more expensive. If you are looking for an afternoon of sightseeing, Multnomah Falls is about 30 miles of east Portland on the Columbia River and the view is spectacular. I do not recommend staying overnight in the city of Portland proper, try Gresham or Vancouver, WA instead.

If you are new to winter driving, visit your local AAA office and get their winter driving brochures. Experience has taught me to always carry an ice scraper, switch out regular windshield washer fluid for non-freezing variety, and do not set the emergency brake if temperatures are below freezing because it can get frozen on.

Stay up to date on road conditions while on your trip!
