No Limit Texas Hold Em is probably the most popular of the poker games. In NLHE, there is an object known as the dealer button. This button is passed around the table after each hand. The person with the button is the last to act after the flop. To the left of the dealer is the small blind and to their left is the big blind. The blinds are like an ante, but only two players pay, this is to insure that there will be money into the pot. The small blind is half of the big blind.
After the blinds are posted, the cards are dealt, two cards face down to each player starting with the small blind. The person to the big blind’s left is first. They can call the big blind or raise. After everyone has called, three cards are dealt face up, this is called the flop. These cards are for everyone to use. Another round of betting than another card is dealt face up for everyone to use, this is called the turn. Another round of betting and then the final community card, the river. One last round of betting and then the players reveal their hand. The best five card hand wins, this can be made using one or both of your cards and three from the community.
The hand rankings from best to worst:
Royal Flush – 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, they must be the same suit
Straight Flush – same as royal flush but it can be any five cards in a row i.e. 2,3,4,5,6 or 7,8,9,10,jack
Four of a King – four of the same card such as 3,3,3,3
Full House – three of a kind and a pair i.e. 2,2,2,4,4
Flush – five cards of the same suit
Straight – five cards in order regardless of suit
Three of a King – three of the same card
Two Pair – two pairs
Pair – two of the same card
High Card – worst of the hands, you don’t have anything.
