Your Questions About Poker

Jenny asks…

What is the cheapest place to buy poker chips?

I’m planning a poker party for new years and I need to buy a good amount of poker chips. I am looking for classy-looking, heavy, clay composite ( I think they’re called) chips with denominations. I’ve looked online and pretty much picked out what I want, and they are about 16 cents a chip. Is there any place online or in stores that sells chips like this for cheaper? Also i’ll probably have 5 or 6 people, how many chips should i get?
.

***Im ok with used chips***

Ken asks…

How many cards are you allowed to swap in 5 card draw poker?

Most of poker rooms on the web allow you to change at maximum 3 of them, but then when I read an „official“ manual regarding the 5 card draw game it emphasizes you can swap as many as you want. Somewhere else it is said you can change only 3 but when u got an Ace you can actually make an exception and draw 4, by showing your Ace card.

Poker is a game with a lot of different special variations and rules, so there is no real answer to your question. The house rules apply and if you set up your own game, your rules will apply.

But to give you at least something tangable, the most common two variations are the ones that you mentioned. First being that you can discard a maximum of 3 cards and second being that you can discard all 5 cards, if you wish.

It is important to always familiarize yourself with the specific rules of the place where you are going to play, before you actually start playing.

Sharon asks…

what makes a person a good Poker player?

I’m very familiar with Gambling & most table games at Casimos & other venues. I know that certain games such as Black Jack can increase odds of winning if a person can effectivley count cards correctly however, like all Casino games the house will always win in the long run.
My question is, how much skill can actually come into play when a person has no control of what cards they’re dealt? Is it just about bluffing? I don’t buy this body language or „Poker tells“ because almost anyone can bluff without flinching if they practice enough.
Since I’ve never been a Poker player, I wanted to know how much would you say is luck & how much % would be actually skill?

I’ll quote some things and respond to them. This question is asked often so maybe in the future I’ll just link people to this one.

„I know that certain games such as Black Jack can increase odds of winning if a person can effectivley count cards correctly however, like all Casino games the house will always win in the long run“

The first part is true (though an understatement); the second part is false. The side with the edge always wins in the long run. The house doesn’t always have the edge. In Blackjack, when the player counts cards and plays correctly, the player has the edge and therefore wins in the long run (which is why Vegas casinos BAN card-counters). Overall the house wins in Blackjack only because most players aren’t counting cards (many aren’t even using basic proper strategy let alone counting). So yes, the house wins long-term in every game it offers (else it wouldn’t offer the game), but it doesn’t win long-term against each individual player in every game. Blackjack isn’t the only beatable game. Vegas has a few beatable video poker machines. Baccarat is technically beatable (see wizardofodds) but it’s not worth beating since the opportunities are rare and the possible edge is very small.

„how much skill can actually come into play when a person has no control of what cards they’re dealt?“

In the long run, the cards always balance out, you’re dealt each hand as often as you’re mathematically supposed to be dealt it (and same with your opponents). The decisions you made with them are what remain. If you made poor decisions, you’ll have lost money. If you made good decisions, then you’ll have won more with your good hands than you lost with your bad hands, so you’ll have won money. If you made a mix of good and bad decisions then you might have just about broke even.

„Since I’ve never been a Poker player, I wanted to know how much would you say is luck & how much % would be actually skill?“

The shorter the time frame you’re talking about, the higher the percentage of luck. The longer the time frame, the higher the percentage of skill (approaches 100% as time approaches infinity). Same is true for blackjack. In the long run 100% skill. Short term anything can happen. But in poker a good player’s edge is higher than in blackjack, so the short-term %skill in poker is a little higher.

„Is it just about bluffing?“

That’s a small part of it. Bluffing with the right frequency, using the right timing and lines and bet sizes to bluff. Calling/raising other people’s bluffs. But there are also skills not related to bluffing such as:
– Getting value from your hands
– Knowing when to fold your good hands, when to stay in with marginal hands
– Proper bet-sizing (which involves math)
– How to play draws: knowing when to chase, when not to (more math), when to semi-bluff, when to raise for the purpose of increasing your implied odds
– Knowing which line to take, when to call vs raise

„I don’t buy this body language or „Poker tells“ because almost anyone can bluff without flinching if they practice enough. “

First of all, the key phrase there is „if they practice enough“. Maybe most of the TV players don’t have tells, but PLENTY of the average players you’ll find in a casino certainly have tells. It’s not like everyone plays full-time or takes it seriously, most people are casual/occasional players so they haven’t been practicing zen-like control and also aren’t reading many poker books (hence plenty of people still give off the tells listed in Caro’s „Book Of Tells“). It’s not just physical tells either, it’s stupid things they say which give away their hand (not everyone is smart ya know). You’d be surprised how obvious some people are.

That said, tells are a very small part of poker. „Reading people“ is more about their other tendencies like how often they bet/call/raise, the sizes of their bets, how they play different types of hands etc. You have to closely observe everything your opponents are doing and the cards they’re showing.

What is the best online poker website?

What is the best online poker website to play on.

admin answers:

Thats hard questions, some sites are better for fishes, some sites are better in the graphics, I suggest you to check the reviews here http://www.gamblingsafe.net/online-poker-reviews.html
where every poker site is reviewed so you can find what you need exactly. In terms of players fulltilt and pokerstars have the best user base, but also the best players in the world so it will be hard to make money there.

Lisa asks…

How many girls out there are attracted to Poker Players? I have a real job but also play pokers part time!?

I have a regular job but also is making poker a career on the side. I’m making about 4 times as much as my regular job and was thinking of taking poker on full time. Is this a good idea, I mean I’m good but not great at poker.

admin answers:

I find it appealing because I play poker also. Don’t quit your regular job to be a „professional“ player, keep it on the side. It is too unreliable and varying to be your main source of income.
