If you wish to start playing poker as a way to earn money you need to prepare yourself. Do a lot of research first. If you simply want to spend some time playing and don’t mind losing your money then simply pace yourself and have a good time.
There are no catch 22’s, it is simply hard to make money. There are people who make their living playing, but they are a scarce minority. Your initial assumption should be that you will be losing money. But it is lots of fun, and if you aren’t losing too much it can be a very entertaining hobby.

I was looking at cardplayer.com and they have an internet poker section and I was wondering how some of these online players cash in so many tourneys? I mean it’s insane. How are they so good?

These poker players generally play loads of tournaments, so they will also place highly as long as they have a good tournament poker style.
Knowing how to adapt your play as the blinds / number of players change is key to performing well in tournaments. As a rule of thumb, you need to start stealing blinds when you have 20-30 blinds in your stack. If you have less than 10 blinds in your stack, you are short stacked, and will probably need to push all-in and make a stand.
Remember that a tournament is a ‚marathon‘ rather than a ’sprint‘.
