Hey Vinod, Stanford and MIT aren’t ivy league but they are extremely good universities, ranked better than most if not all ivy leagues in various fields. Your credentials are very impressive, particularly since you are an international student.

I don’t know if rankings in intraschool tournaments or rankings (like best basketball player, best actor) would be that influential, and not only your 12th board exam marks will count, your grades in previous years also matter a lot. Try to make all your extra curricular activities leadership oriented. Youll also need excellent references from teachers. Students of the year (like valedictorians) are plentiful in ivy league applicant pools so it would be cool if you went out of your city or country for some leadership work.

If you haven’t already, you’ll have to sit your SATs which you should prepare extensively for, since those universities often require high SAT scores. You’ll also need to have extremely good English as well as written and spoken expression since you need to write essays and do interviews.. Students who are top of their class and get perfect sat scores etc do often get rejected because of these things.. Anyway your profile seems really good.. Try going for MIT, UC Berkeley (public) or stanford. If you really wanna go ivy then harvard.. These three are the best in the fields you’ve mentioned. Financial aid comes after you’ve been accepted, Berkely would be cheaper and is ranked very highly (top 3 or 4 in the world) in engineering/cs so I do recommend you give that a go.

Is this just you bragging. Of course you can get into a damn ivy league school with that list of achievements. Im only number 1 in my birth order. I’ve seen people get in with significantly less achievements. I’m at a fairly good school and my only extracurricular activity was intramural basketball. Plus ivy league schools dig the foreign students. If you dont get in my grandma will role over in her grave.

I wouldn’t worry about that. If you don’t get in, try going to a community college first, then transfering to a school you want.

You’re in great shape, probably even if you’re looking for a lot of need-based financial aid. The only thing that could really be better about your application is needing less financial aid (as it’s harder for the schools to afford financial aid for international students since so much of it is from the federal government and thus for permanent residents only).

I’m not quite sure how applying for financial aid works if you’re an international student, but for domestic students, it’s a separate set of forms that goes to the financial aid office instead of the admissions office, and it’s usually due around the same time as your admissions application.

admin answers:

There is very little financial aid for international students from any US college.

Harvard’s acceptance rate is 7%. They accept about 2000 freshman, There entire international student population is 9%. And tuition and room and board is going to be around $50,000 per year.
MIT is even harder to get into.
Your SAT subject scores need to be 700+
that 85 in chemistry is going to hurt you.
Realize that these schools get over 20,000 applications from students who have stellar transcripts.
