Your Questions About Bestec

Mark asks…

Will my graphics card be compatible with my system?

Hello,

I am planning to purchase a graphics card for my PC and so far this is the one I could find at a reasonable price: „Sapphire Radeon X1950 GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I Video Graphic Card.“ The only issue is, I have no way of determining if it will work on my PC, although, I do have a PCI-e 16 slot that I could put it int.

I have a eMachines T5048 and here are my specs for it: ( I don’t know what kind of power supply I have)

That is a 2006 computer that was very low priced at the time.
Found it as a sale after rebates for $250
http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/expired-deals/660140/
when computers cost more than double what today’s cost.
The Pentium 4 3.06GHz CPU is very low performance and would limit even Minecraft to medium with any graphics card. Are you sure you want to put any money into it?
Your power supply is most likely a Bestec 300 watt one.
and probably wearing out. The CPU did not run on 12V at Pentium 4 times, so on paper you can add the 57 watt card, but as a 2007 design card, its performance is also fairly low.
There are specifications here.

The hard drive is the old EIDE type (not SATA).
The card should fit and work, but it is not known whether the power supply is too worn out to support it. Even the cheap power supplies at Newegg would probably be enough.
You might want to look in craigslist for a used pc, or at the Lenovo.com outlet for refurb or scratch+dent desktop or laptop pcs but they are still over $200.
Passmark of the Pentium 4 is only reported as 348. The Core i3’s of today are 10 times the power.

I believe it would plug in and work if the power supply doesn’t give out.
It really is time to retire a low budget 2006 pc.

Sandra asks…

can i run this gpuuuu?

wondering if i could run a his hd 5770

currently running a geforce 9500gt, i tried to install earlier, and i got it into the pci slot but the computer wouldnt post

cpu: amd athlon 64 x2 4000+
psu: bestec atx-250-12z Rev D3r – says 250w max on box
mbo: asustek ivy 1.01
3gb ddr2

admin answers:

I am surprised a 250 watt power supply can even handle a 9500 GT
That’s a 50 Watt card. 350+ watt cpu and 20 amps on 12V recommended.

HD 5770 is 108 Watts, recommended PSU at least 450 Watt & 34 Amps available on 12V

That PSU is 250 Watts MAXIMUM; not continuous power.
14A max on 12V at rev C7R.
Bestec 250 was used in HP systems. They slowly wear out because of the capacitors in them

Jenny asks…

Random computer shutdown….bad PSU?

My family PC had a random shutdown a while a go. I was no BSOD, it just completely powered of no updates or installs were performed. I pulled out the PSU and tested it with my handy dandy Multi-Meter and all the rails seem fine. Any suggestions on what it could be? BTW It’s a Gateway with a POS Bestec PSU.

admin answers:

Yes the problem is probably the „POS“ psu. But is the system running fine when it is running and not shutting off by itself? If it is then it is a psu problem and u should change it (Bestec sucks anyway) but if its not then it is sth else.

Mandy asks…

can i squeeze more from this psu?

so here mission impossible i got a bestec 250watt psu (facepalm) i want switch my current gpu with a new one that will require 30 more watts of power and i want your opinions on anything i might have missed and if you think it will work this is how i figure it so far
CPU i3 550 dual core=125 watts
RAM 6 gigs 1333mhz= 5 watts?
Current GPU evga geforce 210 =30watts
case and cpu fans =20watts
5400rpm harddrive and 7200rpm harddrive=20watts
cd optical drive =???
the GPU i want evga geforce 630=70watts
i figure im using 200 watts right now and ill be gaining 40 for a total of 240 watts obviously under 250 but who knows if it really puts out 250 since its a bestec garbage brand
so let me know if you think it will work and if you have any correction you think i messed up on the wattages im real iffy on the ram the research i did though i came up with basically it doesn’t use much watts like 1.67 watts for 4 gigs so i just overestimated it to 5 watts

admin answers:

The max TDP of that processors is 73 watts. As long as you do not overclock, you won’t exceed your power supply watt capacity.

Those power measurements are also relative to the maximum power draw for all components (at stock speeds) – not all components will be using their maximum power at all times.

You won’t have an issue.

admin answers:

That budget is very small for a good gaming card.

Look for an ATI Radeon 5770, its a good card and its a little older so you should be able to get them under $150. It will play most of those games on Medium-High graphics.

HOWEVER, your power supply is tiny, that will need to be upgraded if you buy a new graphics card.
