It depends on the type of phone your trying to unlock, normally in order to unlock the phone you have to contact the carrier that your phone is with and request that they unlock it. In order for a phone to be unlocked it must use GSM technology, which is why only select phones through carriers such as Sprint and Verizon are capable of being unlocked. AT&T offers global SIM cards but that only makes your calls more expensive, you can also purchase unlocked phones however they are more expensive. The real question is, are you trying to unlock it to use globally orjust to use on other networks?
The iPhone for instance, is capable of being unlocked however most companies will not allow it to be used on their network.

Example: if you have an unlocked phone from T-Mobile, and you have AT&T, you can just pop in your sim card and it will work. If it’s locked then you can only be in the T-Mobile network to use the phone. (:
